AAPC: Accounting and Auditing Policy Committee

G-PP&E Records Retention

The Records Retention Sub-Group of the AAPC G-PP&E is tasked with researching the issue of maintaining PP&E records.  The research would include looking at private sector standards, Federal Government general records retention guidance, and requirements in the current FASAB standards.  The group would include in its project and greatly benefit from research already conducted by agencies. The group would also look at the methods of maintaining records – electronic vs. paper.

The goal of the group is to find viable and supported alternatives to the current level of documentation being required for PP&E assets.  It is not a long term feasible practice for agencies to maintain paper documentation of purchase and payment records for assets that will remain on their books for extended periods and in some cases permanently.

The Records Retention sub-group is being chaired by John Lynskey, National Science Foundation.  If you are interested in joining the records retention sub-group please contact the chair by email or telephone.
